BabyCenter Acquires Mom-Focused Social Network Maya’s Mom; Launching Online Ad Network
You’re reading it here first: The baby and mom-focused BabyCenter, owned by J&J, has made its first acquisition in its 10 years of existence: it has bought Maya’s Mom, a Palo Alto-based social networking site for mothers. Last year MM raised angel funding from some high profile names, including Flickr co-founder Caterina Fake, Yahoo exec Jeff Ralston, Tickle founder James Currier, Presto’s Raymond Stern, Wink’s Michael Tanne, angel investor Jeff Clavier and True Ventures. MM describes itself as a cross between Yahoo Answers and Facebook. It is centered around the asking and answering of questions related to parenting.

MM will stay as a standalone, but the backend social software will be used across BabyCenter’s network of sites in 10 countries, Tina Sharkey, global president of BabyCenter, told me earlier today. This marks Babycenter’s continued transition to a media company, from an earlier focus on e-commerce…Sharkey joined from AOL in January this year and has led the company in that direction. It recently hired Judith Meskill as VP of programming, social media officer. It also appointed Steven Friedman as VP/Publisher of its BabyCenter Network and affiliate sales, to lead the expansion of its sales organization. Both were ex-AOLers, as is Sharkey.
The company is also launching an online ad/affiliate network focused on its category, where it will start selling ads across MM and other mom-focused sites and blogs that will become part of that network. The company will maintain Maya’s Mom’s own white label program targeting local mom groups throughout the country.
