BBC Worldwide America Taps Herb Scannell As President

Herb Scannell, the former MTV Networks (NYSE: VIA) executive who went on to start online video producer Next New Networks, has been named president of BBC Worldwide America. It’s been almost two years since Scannell stepped down as CEO of Next New to become the online video company’s chairman. Scannell replaces Garth Ancier, who announced he would be leaving the company back in November.
Ancier left his post at the end of March and continues as a BBC Worldwide America non-executive Board member.

Scannell, who began his media career at Showtime and The Movie Channel, was best known as president of Nickelodeon Networks and then vice chairman of MTVN. He started Next New in 2006. He officially vacated the CEO role in September ‘08, handing the reigns to Lance Podell. Scannell remained with Next New as chairman until December 2009, when he handed the position over to fellow co-founder, Fred Seibert.
In his return to a traditional media company, Scannell is charged with growing the BBC brand and the business across all divisions in the U.S. He will sit on BBC Worldwide’s Executive Board. In addition to the TV operations, the BBC was also looking at ways to provide more local web content on its U.S. site, something which Scannell is also expected to be focusing on.
