Boston Commuter Daily Mines Local Blogs For Added Coverage And Attention

Free commuter newspaper BostonNow last week began supplementing its news pages with items that local bloggers submitted to the month-old daily’s website. The NYT takes a look at the latest wrinkle in the hyperlocal trend and finds that one particular challenge involves coming up with ways to compensate bloggers. For now, BostonNow (circ. 85,000) plans to give participating bloggers “rewards packages” that include things like press credentials and offers from consulting services to help bloggers make money from traffic on their sites. Overall, the paper hopes that bloggers will be happy with the mutual benefits of greater exposure and free advertising that comes with seeing their words in print and their links on BostonNow’s site, which is divided between a “NewsNow” section and a “CommunityNow” one.
