BREAKING: Yahoo Replaces CEO; Founder Jerry Yang Back In Seat; Decker Is President
This is a huge surprise, even though we knew it was imminent ... Jerry Yang, Yahoo co-founder and long-time board member, as Chief Executive Officer. Terry Semel, current Yahoo Chairman and CEO, will assume the position of non-executive Chairman and serve as an advisor, while also working closely with the Board. The board also named Susan Decker, formerly EVP and Head of Advertiser and Publisher Group, as President of the company. Release.
In Yang’s post on Yodel Anecdotal titled “My New Job,” he thanks Semel, writing that today “marks the close of a great chapter in my life with Terry Semel as my partner.” Why Decker as president? “In addition to knowing this company inside and out, Sue has incredible talents, leadership abilities, a fierce focus on winning, and intense dedication to this company and its people. I look forward to teaming more closely with her as we pursue our joint vision.”
What vision? Yang has an answer for that, too: “A Yahoo! that executes with speed, clarity and discipline. A Yahoo! that increases its focus on differentiating its products and investing in creativity and innovation. A Yahoo! that better monetizes its audience. A Yahoo! whose great talent is galvanized to address its challenges. And a Yahoo! that is better focused on what’s important to its users, customers, and employees. The past year has obviously not been an easy one for us. But we’ve taken important steps to address the challenges we face, and we’re starting to realize some of the benefits – especially with the successful launch of Panama, which continues to receive positive feedback from advertisers and is exceeding our expectations. By the way, that’s directly attributable to the operational excellent mentality Terry has instilled and is a clear sign one of his most critical initiatives is succeeding.”

Say what you want. I’m surprised that they picked Jerry to run the company. He obviously knows the company better than just about anyone, but with his having been there during the “rough times” I would have thought that they’d go for someone who brought a fresher perspective. That being said, I’m a huge fan of Yahoo and am looking for more greatness from them.

My analysis is here: http://sramanamitra.com/blog/1147. Yahoo can be turned around.
Jun 18, 2007 10:04 PM
Yahoo! is a major player in the grand scheme of things and needs a fresh face to turn things around. This is a start. http://pixelspotlight.com/
Jun 18, 2007 10:26 PM
Yahoo! must facing Google and MSN to be the best in its field!!
Jun 19, 2007 12:36 PM
I think the key thing for Yahoo is focus, focus, focus. they seem to be missing the boat on so many things its makes them look like some second tier company. Focus and get something right and lead from that. Their efforts on Panama should be tripled since thats a great potential money maker.
Nov 11, 2007 11:15 PM
So what if he is experienced enough, let him do it. At the moment Yahoo is 2nd after google. They could do a lot more to increse their market share. Time will tell…

Per the license agreement on the photos which you are using, proper attribution is required for you to be able to legally use them. Please have them reflect “Jeremy Johnstone @ Yahoo!” or equivalent. I would appreciate a courtesy heads up as well (via Flickr is fine) when you use my photos in the future.

Yahoo need some new blood for them to grow. By putting decker as the president, they hope he is able to take yahoo into greater heights. Look what have steve jobs done to apple!
Dec 9, 2007 9:09 AM
Hope Jerry turns Yahoo arround
Jan 14, 2008 5:21 AM
I think the key gadget for Yahoo is narrowing gap, indistinct, bottleneck. they seem to be missing the boat on so clutter adventures its makes the people upstairs look like some biparous tier chum. Focus and get person of renown right and aim wizard that. Their efforts on Panama be forced be tripled seeing that thats a bully natural gift kitty maker.

Jerry now step down, it is Decker that is replacing him and he is currently the president! How he (Jerry) is suppose to turn yahoo around when ihe is in the back seat? Guess Decker will now do a better jon then him and he seems more dynamic.

Very interesting and beautiful site. It is a lot of ful information. Thanks. Yahoo the BEST SE IN THE WORLD!
Mar 27, 2008 10:14 AM
Yahoo has work to do to catch up to the level of google!

Now yahoo had a problem of being taken over by microsoft.
Apr 21, 2008 1:05 PM
Looks like yahoo being taken over by microsoft is a done deal unless yahoo can come out with a great plan.
Apr 23, 2008 6:47 AM
Yahoo need some new blood for them to grow, but yahoo remain poor while Same beside Google.
Apr 23, 2008 10:19 AM
Yahoo is far behind google!
Apr 24, 2008 6:21 AM
Know it is my job, Google is the number 1 and will remain so as long as the Internet exists.
Apr 30, 2008 6:57 PM
I fully concur. Yahoo is lightyears behind Google. And Microsoft is lightyears behind Yahoo. But that’s a whole different story…
May 5, 2008 5:43 AM
Microsoft abandon the plan to take over yahoo….. Looks like yahoo shares is going to take a tumble.
May 5, 2008 5:45 AM
I still feel microsoft will buy over yahoo soon or later, they are just waiting for a good deal.
May 7, 2008 10:23 AM
Their efforts on Panama should be tripled since thats a great potential money maker.
May 16, 2008 4:16 PM
I keep on wondering why Yahoo hasn’t been sold. The offer from Microsoft was very huge but still they don’t accept. Obvisously this CEO isn’t satisfied with money.
May 19, 2008 12:01 PM
Yahoo is dead, nobody can catch up with Google, when you think, is huge!
May 22, 2008 6:35 AM
Here in Belgium almost nobody uses Yahoo: The rankings do simply not show the best on top, but Google does. I think the rankings of Google are simply the best and Yahoo will never be able to compete against Google.
May 27, 2008 9:58 AM
Yahoo is ridicul next Google, I confirm, Google is and will remain the best!
May 29, 2008 8:26 AM
Yahoo is the most trafficked site on the internet at the moment, dont dismiss them totally. The will be back.
May 29, 2008 11:00 AM
Yahoo is bad, it’s simple, it can not peg the google !
Jun 4, 2008 12:30 PM
MSN and Yahoo will have their day against google I think, really the technolgy for developing good search reults in google relies onj only one or two key factors.
Jun 4, 2008 1:07 PM
It seems that Microsoft want to make an alliance with Google, someone can confirm ?
Jun 5, 2008 5:28 AM
I am sure that there is an association between Microsoft and google!
Jun 6, 2008 1:24 PM
I’m still not really convinced with that vision statement. I mean, vision needs to be simple and to the point. That vision sounds too complicated, and way too democratic. While Yahoo! Must listen to its customers, it cannot be everything to everybody otherwise it looses and just becomes a big hive of really everything but nothing at the same time. We don’t need an online Wal-mart of sorts : we need something that’s dedicated and focused to at least one mission (even if that mission is : to control all information in the world!)
Jun 15, 2008 5:48 PM
Yahoo and google is hatching a deal on their advertising.
Jun 17, 2008 4:29 PM
I think Microsoft is going to die a very slow and painful death in the years to come, since they are still charging their customers money for their products - unlike Google & co.
Jun 19, 2008 2:09 PM
IT ABOUT TIME THEY LET HIM GO HE DRAGING YAHOO DOWN BIG TIME. JERRY YANG CAUSED BIG PROBLEMS FOR YAHOO AND THERE SHARE HOLDERS.
Jul 4, 2008 4:15 AM

Thank you very very much.
Aug 10, 2008 9:27 AM
Really great blog and really great articles carry on your great job…
Aug 17, 2008 1:53 AM
I heard a lot of rumors Jerry would be put out of his position but never thought it’d actually happen. Maybe Yahoo’s services will improve now with someone else in charge
Aug 19, 2008 7:38 PM
Very good article. Thanks for some sound advice. It’s a topic that all creative industries need to know a lot about.
Aug 22, 2008 8:29 PM
yahoo is dying…
Aug 27, 2008 10:50 AM
Great blog, interesting article…
Sep 19, 2008 5:47 AM
I mostly use google but depending of my goal, sometimes yahoo offers better results.
Sep 19, 2008 5:49 AM
Very nice article about a topic that is discussed in many blogs. I think yahoo could have been better than google. I guess Google has the money to grow so fast!
Sep 19, 2008 5:51 AM
Is Yahoo totaly out??? What do you think?
Sep 22, 2008 2:08 PM
Yes Yahoo is out!
Sep 22, 2008 2:09 PM
Google is and will be the best search engine!
Sep 27, 2008 4:13 PM
Thanks a lot really great article, carry on your great job !!!
Sep 28, 2008 12:20 PM
I really wonder if Yahoo will stay forever. If you ask me, Google or Microsoft will buy them one day. If that happens, I hope Microsoft wins. If Google wins, it would get all the search market in its hands!
Oct 3, 2008 6:16 AM
Yes I think so, I believe that Google will be so strong that they´ll buy all concurrents.
Oct 7, 2008 9:25 AM
Yahoo shares gained 81 cents finish at $28.12 Monday, then surged $1.11, or nearly 4 percent, in the extended session. The company’s stock price has plunged by nearly 30 percent since the end of 2005
Oct 7, 2008 9:28 AM
This is the time for new executive leadership, with different skills and strengths, to step in and drive the company to realize its full potential. I favor Google. It is winner of all times.
Oct 7, 2008 9:33 AM
Google’s sales surpassed Yahoo’s after the fourth quarter of 2004 as searching the Web became more popular among consumers and companies bought more of the four-line text links that appear next to search results
Oct 16, 2008 3:22 AM
It’s a topic that all creative industries need to know a lot about. For info, I favor Google !!!!!
Yes very good article.
Oct 16, 2008 3:03 PM
I also believe that Google will be so strong that they´ll buy all concurrents.
Oct 16, 2008 3:24 PM
Google is becoming to powerful…
Oct 17, 2008 1:57 PM
Google is the best. normally used yahoo. Thank you
Oct 17, 2008 2:40 PM
Yahoo messed up by holding out for too much money from Microsoft. Yahoo CEO at the time did not understand how much the market had changed. Yahoo has not bee the only search engine in the game for a long long time. More over they have made some questionable business practices recently….He should have been out right fired and had his stock options striped.
Nov 11, 2008 4:08 PM
At the moment google is really very powerful in the section of search engines but they got too powerful. OI dont have a good feeling how google is going to develope.
Nov 13, 2008 10:44 PM
Yahoo needs to focus on the user experience like Google has been doing over the past few years. Competition is good and keeps Google on its toes so hopefully Yahoo will still be here in 5 years time and not just a memory.
Nov 19, 2008 9:43 AM
I think Google will cancel Yahoo from the market in a few years. Just look at all the newiest things that google has brought the last months!
Nov 20, 2008 5:59 PM
In a few years google will swallow microsoft, yahoo etc.
Nov 21, 2008 9:49 AM
I think that yahoo won’t survive much longer…
Nov 21, 2008 9:51 AM
You’re right. Yahoo has no future…
Nov 21, 2008 6:23 PM
Once..this dude was on top of the world..well he is still super rich.
Nov 27, 2008 4:56 PM
Yahoo has certainly future!
Dec 1, 2008 1:39 PM
Never ever, yahoo is gonna be sold.
Dec 2, 2008 5:28 AM
I’m also sure, that yahoo is gonna be sold. I don’t think, that yahoo can survive this crisis alone after the news of the last weeks…
They concentrated to much in advertisings, instead of offering a clear and simple search for their users. I personally don’t use yahoo, cause their site is really confusing with all these ads inside… :-/
Dec 3, 2008 11:55 AM
I found your article while searching for infos about Jerry Yang… Funny that he’s out of the game again after nearly 18 month… :o)
Dec 15, 2008 6:12 PM
Yang was a big error by yahoo!
Dec 21, 2008 6:23 PM
Jerry Yang ist the greatest mistake of Yahoo. In comparison of Google he wakes up too late. Google is in Europe and in the US the giant and Yahoo is the looser.
In the year 1994 Yahoo was founded. 1998 folks Google. In the follow years Yahoo have lost a lot of points on the search engine market. And this is just the beginning. Yahoo have no chance to win against Google…
Jan 2, 2009 9:42 AM
There is no future to yahoo.
We are so sadly!
Jan 7, 2009 7:06 PM
yahoo is bad! i hope that cuill can figth google!
Jan 8, 2009 5:57 PM
Cuill looks good but the searchresults are very bad. Microsoft will buy Yahoo this year. Trust me.
Jan 10, 2009 7:12 AM
Really: Cuil is the biggest bullshit I have seen yet!
Jan 12, 2009 11:25 AM
Really nice blog, i speack on my blog, thank.
Jan 12, 2009 4:47 PM
You’re right. Yahoo has no future…thank
Jan 25, 2009 12:12 PM
Yes, Cuill and Yahoo has no future. Thats right but i think Google has to mutch power. That´s also bad.
Jan 31, 2009 8:51 PM
yahoo is already dead
Mar 3, 2009 11:19 AM
who is yahoo ? Google is the world!
Mar 3, 2009 11:21 AM
i want to use more than one search engine. yahoo have to be more popular.
Mar 31, 2009 8:40 AM
Why using yahoo when having google?
Apr 13, 2009 2:02 PM
Yahoo is gone!
May 21, 2009 2:35 AM
Wer ist YAHOO? GOOGLE ist die Welt!!!
yahoo is already dead
May 21, 2009 1:33 PM
Yahoo coming back.
Let’s keep this quiet!
