AppleTV rental software postponed: Apple announced the software upgrade that will allow AppleTV to handle movie rentals, along with built-in music store, access to Flickr photostreams and .Mac Web Galleries, has been postponed. It originally was slated for release two weeks after Steve Jobs’ Macworld keynote.

mtvU adds 2.6 million subscribers, announces deals with leading distributers: MTV’s 24-hour college network has added 2.6 million subscribers and has deals with Charter Communications (NSDQ: CHTR), Verizon (NYSE: VZ) FiOS TV, Suddenlink Communications, AT&T (NYSE: T) u-Verse and nearly 70 others. Saturday, mtvU will launch in over 700 college communities across the country; currently, it is broadcast to over 750 campuses. (Release.)

Break Media to cross-promote new sites: In launching new properties and a vertical ad network, men’s video-sharing site Break.com has become Break Media, ClickZ reports. It hopes its new sites, Cage Potato, Holy Taco and Chickipedia will quickly grow through cross-promotion on flagship Break.com. In developing all four sites, the company aims to enhance the appeal of its ad network, which consists of lesser-known sites that have at least 150,000 monthly uniques.
