Canpages Buys Online Directory ZipLocal

The Canadian local search market now has one less player. Directory publisher Canpages said Monday it would buy online directory ZipLocal.ca for about $2.45 million (US). Canpages said the deal would boost its rapidly-growing online search business, by adding ZipLocals’ user-generated reviews and ratings of businesses to its own search site, which consists mostly of straightforward listings. Analyst Greg Sterling says that the deal consolidates the Canadian local search market among three primary local players—Canpages, Yellow Pages Group, and Weblocal—who are pitted against Yelp and the major search engines. ZipLocal launched a United State expansion a year ago saying that the local search market in the U.S. was about twenty times bigger than in Canada, although Sterling says its status is now unclear.
