Citizen journalism site AllVoices has raised $3 million in a funding round, we have confirmed with the company. The site lets any user contribute a piece of news and also features a stream of mainstream news content from various feeds. The user contributed coverage seems haphazard, with pieces ranging from the serious (an arrest of a man with an assault gun and map of a military base) to the political/deranged (a rant against President Obama, coupled with an image of the president as Osama Bin Laden).

But AllVoices has managed since launching in July 2008 to attract a high volume of user-generated news content; TechCrunch, which first reported on the funding, puts traffic at five million unique visitors a month.

With the new funding, AllVoices will have now raised at least $7.5 million, including $4.5 million the site received two-and-a-half years ago, while still in stealth. The new cash comes from existing investor VantagePoint Venture Partners.
