Cloudera, founded last year by technology veterans from companies that include Oracle, Facebook and Google (NSDQ: GOOG), has raised $5 million in first-round funding from Accel Partners. The company’s main product is a tweaked version of Apache’s open-source Hadoop Java software, which search engines, social networks and other websites use to manage and analyze large amounts of ever-changing data. Cloudera has modified the free software to come up with a commercial version that it is pitching to companies that have to deal with vast amounts of information, including energy and commodity businesses. Cloudera is led by Michael Olson, a former VP at Oracle and CEO of SleepyCat Software, another open-source database engine that was sold to Oracle in 2006.
