@ CM Summit: Meeker: Smartphone Shipments Will Surpass PCs Within Two Years

Morgan Stanley internet analyst Mary Meeker raced through a stream of stats, mostly about mobile, during her presentation at the Conversational Marketing Summit. One of the most surprising was that the US has surpassed Japan as the country with the most 3G users. That has led to a shift in mobile innovation from Asia and Europe to the US, that Meeker says is going to last. What is perhaps not so surprising, considering all the excitement about Steve Jobs’ iPhone 4 preview today, Meeker says that global smartphone shipments will reach nearly 500 million units by 2012, exceeding PC shipments by that point.
Other highlights from the presentation included:

—Facebook is the most under-monetized brand in terms of number of users compared to other media outlets
—Jobs’ reinvention of Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) can’t be overstated: In just a short amount of time, Apple entered the smartphone business and now the iPhone accounts for 40 percent of its total revenues. In comparison, Macs are just 28 percent of its revenue pie, while iPods are 14 percent, followed by iTunes at 10 percent.
—Internet/mobile media time spent is still “out of whack” compared to ad spend: 28 percent of time spent but only 13 percent of ad dollars. But Meeker said she was confident that that would soon work itself out.
—Meeker sees potential upside in lower online CPMs—but will it ever hit the broadcast-cable heights?
