Comcast will no longer be using Microsoft’s on-screen program guide for its digital cable boxes in Washington state, the only U.S. location that software feature was being used. The cable company, which launched the Microsoft TV Foundation Edition service in Nov. 2004, will instead use the programming software listing it developed with Gemstar-TV Guide called GuideWorks. Comcast says GuideWorks also will support future “cross-platform features” that integrate its cable, online and digital voice offerings. Aside from a desire to use its own product, Comcast said its customers had complained the Microsoft service tended to be unresponsive. For its part, Microsoft does not appear to be too disappointed about having its Microsoft TV program guide dropped in its home state, Seattle PI reports. Microsoft has been concentrating the service offering in Latin America and has not been marketing it actively domestically.
