Condé Nast Cuts Keep Coming: W Lays Off Seven Staffers

About seven sales staffers were let go from Condé Nast’s W magazine on Friday, Mediaweek reports. These latest cuts are part a slow bleed, since the magazine publishers at Condé Nast tend to operate individually. Aside from the 180 cuts that resulted from the closure of Gourmet, Modern Bride, Elegant Bride, and the parenting lifestyle mag Cookie. Condé Nast CEO Chuck Townsend has said that there will be no more magazine closings this year, but some titles could reduce publishing frequency—and with that, more layoffs on top of those already planned through the next two weeks.

Meanwhile, former Gourmet editor Ruth Reichl tells NY Observer’s John Koblin that she’s writing a book about the “rarefied world” of Condé Nast and how “the kind of luxury that we all had is probably a thing of the past. The new business realities have changed the life at Condé Nast. I think print magazines as we know them will cease to exist.” Meanwhile, Gawker has some details on one particular layoff victim, Self magazine’s Stephanie Newhouse, a relative of S.I. Newhouse, the head of Condé Nast’s parent, Advance Publications.
