Content Monitor Attributor Raises $3.2 Million Fourth Round

Content syndication watchdog Attributor has raised a $3.2 million fourth round as it seeks to market its anti-piracy services more widely. Previous backers Sigma Partners, JAFCO Ventures and Selby Ventures participated in this round, which brings its total capital raised to $25.2 million. Speaking of expanding, San Mateo, CA-based Attributor has also struck two separate partnerships with the Magazine Publishers of America and the UK’s Periodical Publishers Association to sell its piracy controls and syndication services.

The deal with the two magazine organizations will give Attributor access to the MPA’s 225 domestic and 50 international publishing companies, along with the PPA’s nearly 200 publishers. Members who sign up through either group get an unspecified discount on the full suite of Attributor offerings.

Last year, Attributor began running the Fair Syndication Consortium, which has signed up over 2,000 publishers, including 80 percent of the top U.S. newspaper companies, is another tool it’s been marketing that promises to help pubs track down unauthorized use of their content on the web and try to force the offending sites to share some revenues. The company is also marketing its wares to book publishers as the rise of e-books is leading to greater fears that that area, which unlike video and music, may start to experience the problem of piracy as well.

For now, Attributor is more “watchdog” than “attack dog” for content creators. Jim Pitkow, CEO and co-founded for Attributor, tells me that could change a bit, as the company wants to focus more on enforcement. He didn’t have too many details about the approach Attributor would take to policing unauthorized content use, but Pitkow wants to find a method that is not too litigious.

The second part enforcement involves recovering revenues for original content producers from offending sites. The new funding is designed to provide the means for Attributor to create the right set of tools for giving its services a bit more teeth.
