CultureMap, a startup which runs a local online magazine in Houston, has raised a first round of funding. A spokesman tells us that the company raised an amount in the “low seven figures” from a group of investors who are mostly from the Houston area.

The site primarily features entertainment news, which is centered around a map, so that users can see where articles have taken place; there’s also a city guide and an events guide. New cash will be used to expand the company’s editorial, sales and marketing staffs as it prepares to cover additional cities. In Houston, the startup has hired several reporters from the Houston Chronicle, including long-time society reporter Shelby Hodge and style critic Clifford Pugh.
