Dish Network’s Subs, Revs Rise; Profits Fall Less Than Expected
The economy may be getting better, but consumers’ interest in home entertainment is continuing to rise, as Dish Network (NSDQ: DISH) said it added 237,000 net new subs in Q1. That’s a reversal of last year, when Dish lost subs. It’s uncertain whether it will continue its momentum—this is the fourth consecutive quarter in which it added subs—as Cablevision’s sub gains appear to be slowing, while both Comcast (NSDQ: CMCSA) and Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) lost subscribers. Meanwhile, the AP noted that Dish’s closest and larger rival, DirecTV (NYSE: DTV), added just 100,000 subs in Q1, down from 460,000 additions last year.
