This is not the way Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) wanted to cap off its big week: Gawker reports that the e-mail addresses of thousands of early iPad buyers were inadvertently exposed by AT&T (NYSE: T) in what the site is calling the “worst security breach” in Apple’s history. Apparently, the list of e-mail addresses included those of Michael Bloomberg and New York Times (NYSE: NYT) CEO Janet Robinson.
AT&T confirms the issue in a statement provided to SAI, saying it turned off a feature that exposed the e-mail addresses on Tuesday and is reaching out to customers whose addresses might have been obtained by third-parties.
Lots of unanswered questions at this point, however, including—importantly—whether the list was actually circulated. Gawker says it was notified of the security breach by Goatse Security, a group which apparently calls attention to security holes on the internet.
It doesn’t look like Apple has made a statement about the matter yet (We’ve asked for one).
