College sports network ESPNU is tapping students, professors and athletic departments at 20 universities to cover their respective schools’ games as part of an effort to by the Disney (NYSE: DIS) unit to use more user-generated content. Plus, the move will easily widen the network’s ability to cover more teams. So far, 11 schools have signed up for the student-run effort, dubbed the ESPNU Campus Connection, which kicks off January 9 with coverage of men’s basketball at UNC-Asheville, the network said in an email release.

The network is looking for students to provide clips featuring play-by-play and analyst commentary, sideline reporting and producing televised events on ESPNU. Additionally, the content will be used across all ESPN channels and sites, including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN360.com, and ESPN magazine as well. At least initially, ESPNU will hand out coverage assignments to the schools.
