Ex-BusinessWeek EIC Adler Joins Thomson Reuters

Stephen J. Adler, who resigned his post as editor-in-chief of BusinessWeek shortly after the magazine’s sale to Bloomberg, is joining Thomson Reuters (NYSE: TRI). Adler will become SVP and editorial director of the news service’s Professional division, which covers Legal, Tax & Accounting, and Healthcare & Science businesses, reporting to Jim Smith, the division’s CEO.
The news of Adler’s hire comes a day after BusinessWeek officially transitioned to Bloomberg. Adler spent more than four years in the top spot at BusinessWeek. During his tenure, he oversaw the integration of the mag’s print and online operations, as well as digital initiatives. Before that, Adler spent 16 years at the WSJ, where he held a number of posts, including legal editor, investigative editor, and deputy managing editor.

Adler’s arrival at Thomson Reuters comes as the news service is trying to broaden its appeal to a general business audience. The same day Bloomberg fully claimed BusinessWeek as its own, Thomson Reuters closed its $20 million acquisition of financial news opinion site BreakingViews.
