Facebook And New York AG Settle Dispute Over Child Safety Protections

Facebook has promised greater vigilance in responding to obscene material and reports of sexual predators on its site, the AP reports. (via Crain’s). The promise is part of an agreement with New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who, late last month, threatened to subpoena the social net when his investigation concluded that Facebook’s child protection enforcement was lax. Cuomo’s office created fake profiles of underage users, which were then presented with obscene material and solicitations from adults. When investigators, posing as outraged parents, complained to Facebook, they said they didn’t receive a timely response.

Perhaps hoping to avoid the kind of drawn out troubles with state law enforcement officials that have plagued MySpace, Facebook readily accepted the new requirements, which demand that:
—it must respond to complaints related to pornography or unwanted contact within 24 hours of receiving them.
—within 72 hours of receiving such a report, Facebook must tell the complainant how it plans to respond.
—posting of its safety procedures on the site.
Separately, Cuomo’s office said it is in discussions with other, unidentified social nets about getting them to sign similar pledges to install strict child safety measures.
