A big-name Silicon Valley addition to the Walt Disney (NYSE: DIS) board. The company just nominated Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg to its board of directors. In a statement, Disney Chairman John Pepper says Sandberg will add value in part because of her extensive online experience. She will also bring some youth to the board, considering that, at 40, she is 13 years junior to the next youngest director. (Put another way, the average age is 59.5 now; her election will lower it to 58.) Disney already has 12 directors, including major shareholder Steve Jobs.

Before joining Facebook a year-and-a-half ago, Sandberg had been the VP of global online sales at Google (NSDQ: GOOG). She also was the former Chief of Staff of the U.S. Treasury Department. Sandberg added another corporate board to her resume in March, when she joined the Starbucks board of directors. She will be the second Disney director with ties to the coffee chain; former Starbucks CEO Orrin Smith has been on the board since 2006. Release.
