Facebook’s Starting Free Classifieds; So Is Friendster

Not that MySpace classifieds put the world on fire, but Facebook, by virtue of being more organized, might have a better chance at it: it is adding free classifieds. It is calling the new service Marketplace and plans to introduce it on Friday, reports NYT. It will allow users to create classified listings in four categories: housing; jobs; for sale; and “other,“a catch-all. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said he planned to one day allow sellers to pay to more widely promote their listings on the site. He also noted that the service could create new opportunities to serve up related ads around certain kinds of listings.

Also, on a slightly smaller scale, but Friendster has signed a multi-year partnership with online classified network OLX allowing the social net’s members to post free listings and access locally targeted classified ads. OLX, which is based in New York and Buenos Aires and is available in 31 countries, will set up all the usual categories. Release
