Fwix Moves Beyond News, Indexing ‘Everything’ Local

Hyperlocal newswire wants to do more than just aggregate news. Starting today, it will begin adding real estate listings, restaurant specials and other local info gathered from sites like Twitter and Foursquare in a single index. The index can be built as an API or published as a widget on any site. “We think we’ve done a good job with filtering local news, but now we’re ready to index information in general,” Darian Shirazi, Fwix CEO and founder told paidContent. “We think of it along the lines of what Google (NSDQ: GOOG) does, except they index information according to keywords, we index information according to latitude and longitude.”

The content is customizable for developers and publishers. It’s Fwix’s hope that users will attach its widgets to their website or blog. The widget contains a running stream of news and marketing content related to their local area. Basically, if someone tweets about a local business or checks into a bar on Foursquare, the mention will show up on the Fwix widget.

While Fwix won’t charge restaurants or realtors to appear in its streams, it does eventually hope that they will want to advertise on the widgets.

In addition to Twitter and Foursquare, Fwix’s local index will come from a variety of sites, such as Flickr, Yelp, Gowalla, Trulia, Groupon, Citysearch, Oodle and other sources, including local governments and police blotters with information tied to 30,000-plus neighborhoods.

This expansion of Fwix’s offerings comes as more community news organizations, such as Connecticut’s Mainstreet Connect, which raised a $3.97 million round this week, are working their way into the hyperlocal space.

Since launching late last summer with a $2.75 million first round from BlueRun Ventures, San Francisco-based Fwix has expanded pretty rapidly. In addition to setting up feeds in the UK, Fwix got a big boost after it struck a deal three months ago with the NYT’s Regional Media Group properties to syndicate Fwix’s newswire across those papers’ websites.
