Google Acquires Voice Communications Manager GrandCentral

Google adds to its web app collection with the acquisition of privately held Grand Central Communications, a company that allows users to link multiple phone numbers to one life-long central number and manage it all—including voice mail—online. No terms were disclosed; the company was backed by Halsey Minor’s Minor Ventures. The Fremont, CA-based startup was in beta and will stay that way with Google for now. One change: Google won’t allow users to create custom ringtones; instead they’ll have to choose from licensed options. Co-founders Craig Walker and Vincent Paquet will stay on.

Company blog: “We’re particularly excited about this because it ensures that not only will we have the resources to continue to bring you even more innovative communications features down the road, but that we will be able to continue to offer you the service, with many features for free, for a long time to come.”

Google Blog: Wesley Chan, product manager: “We think GrandCentral’s technology fits well into Google’s efforts to provide services that enhance the collaborative exchange of information between our users.”

The possibility of a sale to Google was raised first by TechCrunch. The acquisition is likely to raise more than a few eyebrows when it comes to privacy, since it will aggregate even more private information under the Google umbrella.
