On the eve of the quarterly federal court hearing to monitor Microsoft’s antitrust agreement, Google asked Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly to extend the oversight past the scheduled November expiration. Google contends via an amicus brief filed Monday that Microsoft’s recent agreement to make changes in the way Windows Vista handles desktop search isn’t enough. From the brief via AP: “Microsoft’s hardwiring of its own desktop search product into Windows Vista violates the final judgment.”
DJ Newswires: From a statement by David Drummond, chief legal officer at Google: “While the remedies won by the antitrust authorities are a ‘positive step,’ the issues raise ‘the need for continued judicial oversight of Microsoft’s practices.’”

—Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith’s statement: “Microsoft went the extra mile to resolve these issues in a spirit of compromise; Google is refusing to give an inch. We believe these additional changes Google is demanding were rejected for good reason by the government and would be a setback for computer users.”
