Updated: A revised settlement in the long-running Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Books settlement was due today—but lawyers for Google, the Author’s Guild, and the Association of American Publishers are asking a judge for more time. In a letter to Judge Denny Chin today, lawyers ask the judge for an extension until this Friday, which he has approved. The parties are trying to revise the agreement in response to objections from the Justice Department and competitors, who claim that in its current form it would give Google too much control over the electronic distribution of in-copyright, out-of-print books.

In late September, Chin postponed a “fairness” hearing in the case, citing the ongoing talks, which he noted would likely change the structure of the settlement. It’s unclear what exactly has caused this delay, although the letter refers to meetings the parties have had with the Justice Department.
