Google Buys AppJet To Boost Google Wave

Google (NSDQ: GOOG) is continuing on with its recent shopping spree: The company has bought up AppJet, the startup behind the EtherPad online word processor. EtherPad bills itself as “the only web-based word processor that allows people to work together in really real-time.” Like Google Wave, Google’s real-time communications product, EtherPad users can see changes made to a document instantly as they are added.

In a blog post, AppJet says its “team will continue its work on realtime collaboration by joining the Google Wave team.” As for EtherPad itself—which has free and paid versions—it is being discontinued; users will instead get an invitation to join Google Wave.
Financial terms of the acquisition were not announced, although TechCrunch puts the purchase price in the “low eight figures.” The two-year-old startup—which counts several former Google employees among its executives—had raised just over $700,000 in funding.
This is Google’s sixth acquisition since August—and its fourth over the last month. The company’s recent purchases have spanned its many businesses, including Teracent for display ads, Gizmo5 for Google Voice, adMob for mobile ads, On2 for online video, and reCaptcha for Google Books.
