Google News Renews Deal To Host AP Stories
After more than half a year of “ongoing discussions,” Google (NSDQ: GOOG) has renewed its deal with the Associated Press to host AP articles on Google News. Google began to host material produced by the AP on the site three years ago, but the licensing deal expired in January and Google and the AP had been in and out of discussions since then about how to revise it.
At one point earlier this year, Google News stopped hosting new AP content, apparently expecting that the deal wouldn’t be renewed, although eventually, AP stories reappeared. AP CEO Tom Curley had also hinted that Google wasn’t willing to acquiesce to some of the AP’s demands, saying in October, “We haven’t talked. We haven’t talked. We haven’t talked with them in any serious way.”

The AP’s demands reportedly included getting access to “real-time metrics” about its content and also better play for its stories. It’s unclear if Google agreed to either. AP Chief Revenue Officer Jane Seagrave told us in an interview that “we’re pleased that we were able to work out some differences and come to a deal that I think helps provide a better experience to consumers,” although she wouldn’t elaborate on what that improved experience would entail.
In a short statement, Google’s Josh Cohen says, “We look forward to future collaborations, including on ways Google and AP can work together to create a better user experience and new revenue opportunities.”
The agreement follows one the AP reached with Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) in February. The terms of that licensing deal also weren’t disclosed, although those discussions were always said to be more amicable than those between the AP and Google.
Curley had said that the online licensing deals were a top priority, partly in order to make up for the decreased revenue the AP is generating from its newspaper partners. The AP says its own write-up The WSJ says in its write-up about today’s agreement that Google will now pay the AP “in the seven figures annually.”
