Google To Cut 200 Jobs In Sales And Marketing

Google said Thursday it would cut about 200 jobs in sales and marketing, in the third set of layoffs in three months for the company. In a post on the company’s blog, Sales Chief Omid Kordestani said that due to the company’s rapid growth, “in some areas we’ve created overlapping organizations which not only duplicate effort but also complicate the decision-making process. That makes our teams less effective and efficient than they should be. In addition, we over-invested in some areas in preparation for the growth trends we were experiencing at the time.” In mid-January, Google cut 100 recruiters from its ranks. And in February, the company said it would lay off 40 employees as it exited the radio business. In total, the cuts account for less than two percent of the 20,222 employees Google had at the end of December.

A Google spokesman would not break down the areas in which Thursday’s layoffs occurred. Via e-mail, he noted, “All the people affected will be offered the chance to find other jobs at Google (NSDQ: GOOG). We are still hiring, though at a very reduced rate.”
