GroupM North America Reorg Puts Digital Chief Rob Norman In The CEO Seat
Rob Norman (pictured) will add the title of CEO of GroupM North America to his current role as head of GroupM Interactive, the WPP media unit’s digital arm. Norman replaces Marc Goldstein, who will leave his role as GroupM NA CEO effective March 31. Goldstein has been in the post since February 2007. He’lll continue his relationship with GroupM as a senior advisor to the management group. Placing a digital exec like Norman at the top signifies the shifting importance from traditional advertising and media buying to digital and new media, the company indicated in a statement. However, while Norman is CEO of the North American operations, he will still share management of the regional unit with TV media buying vet Rino Scanzoni, GroupM’s Chief Investment Officer. Furthermore, Norman will report to GroupM Global COO Rupert Day while Scanzoni will continue to report to GroupM Global CEO Irwin Gotlieb.
Norman joined GroupM as part of WPP’s acquisition of Tempus Group in 2001. Shortly after that, he was named as a founding board member of the then newly merged Mediaedge:cia, where he led the agency’s digital practice from the beginning. He served chairman of Mediaedge:cia in the U.K. from 2002-2004 before moving to New York to lead the creation of MEC Interaction in 2005 prior to becoming CEO of GroupM Interaction in 2006.
Goldstein also arrived at WPP before GroupM was formed in 2003. He first served as Mindshare North America’s president of National Broadcasting and Programming in November 2000. He was given the title of President-CEO in April 2002.
