By Steve Busfield: The Guardian Media Group group director of digital strategy and development, Simon Waldman, is to join LoveFilm.

Waldman is to become group product director for the DVD rental subscription service, which is moving into digital distribution.

Waldman, who was launch editor of Guardian Unlimited in 1999, has been group director of digital strategy and development for GMG since 2006.

His book, Creative Disruption: Why You Need to Shake Up Your Business for the Digital Age, is due to be published later this year. GMG publishes MediaGuardian.co.uk.

The LoveFilm chief executive, Simon Calver, said: “Simon is truly an expert at harnessing the power of a destination website. Simon will be instrumental in taking the core product, LoveFilm, to the next level.”

Waldman, who spent 14 years with the Guardian and GMG, said: “I have had 14 brilliant years at the Guardian and GMG, and the incredible fortune to work with great people to build one of the best newspaper sites in the world. But, it is time to move on. And the opportunity at LoveFilm is too exciting to turn down.”

“GNM’s digital team is the best it has ever been, and the site continues to crackle with innovation and creativity. I wish everyone involved with GNM’s digital activities all the very best for the future.”

Robert adds: It’s certainly all change at the top of Guardian online activities. Waldman’s departure comes with Guardian News & Media digital director Emily Bell leaving for Columbia University and GMG CEO Carolyn McCall exiting to run easyJet.
