Guardian News And Media Laying Off Six Employees In U.S.

Guardian America, the U.S. arm of Guardian News and Media (of which we’re a separate division), is laying off six production/edit employees, we have learned and confirmed. Most of them are in Guardian’s Washington DC office, and have been given three months notice. None of the U.S. correspondents are affected by this move. This comes as the company is trying to re-figure its U.S. expansion strategy and how best to mesh it with the parent back in London. Earlier last month, the consulting editor of Guardian America Jim Brady left to head editorial at Politico’s new sister site focusing on local DC area news.

Guardian recently abandoned its GuardianAmerica.com homepage strategy, instead focusing on its U.S. index section on the main Guardian.co.uk website. According to the company, this is not a pullback on the commitment to monetize its U.S. audience; about 30 percent of its pageviews come from U.S., and, in fact, GNM head Tim Brooks and new international head Stella Beaumont will be in New York City later this month for a Guardian America roadshow of sorts, meeting with media agencies, etc.
