Hachette Joins Macmillan In Rejecting $9.99 Baseline E-Book Pricing

Lagardere SCA’s Hachette Book Group is joining fellow iPad launch publisher Macmillan in plans to demand higher prices for its e-books, the WSJ reports. Macmillan’s titles in all formats initially were pulled from Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) after it said it would set its own prices—preferably in the $12.99-$14.99 range—instead of wholesaling them to Amazon, which generally sets many of its Kindle titles around $9.99. So far, Amazon doesn’t appear to have cut off Hachette, since titles such as Alice Sebold’s The Lovely Bones are still available in all formats, including a $4.99 Kindle version.

Hachette and Macmillan are two of the five launch publishers for the iPad’s iBookstore. The others are Penguin, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, which are likely to demand higher price ranges as well.
