A First For HBO: Addiction Documentary Series Will Be Free Online

HBO’s upcoming documentary series, The Addiction Project, is getting a full set of digital touch-points ready for support: in addition to a book and outreach program, viewers will be able to experience the series through HBO On Demand, podcasts, web streams, a DVD. And, in addition to the program’s main website, individuals will be able to customize a second site if they, or a family member or friend, need particular help overcoming their respective addictions. The main site will have a variety of information and resources on getting assistance.
The initial 90-minute documentary airs on Thursday at 9 p.m. eastern. Immediately after, all 14 films in the series will be available in their entirety for free on the site—the first time the pay cable network has opened its content like this on the web. And there’s a lot of it: HBO.com/addiction currently has over 250 pages of information and, after Thursday, will have over 30 hours of video.
Away from the HBO site, documentarians like Barbara Kopple, will blog about their films. Kopple is blogging on Huffington Post.

I also work for a recovery center, non-profit and would like to know if there is any way to get the dvd series free or a a minimum charge.  Most of my clients can’t afford basic cable, let alone HBO.  I have purchased the book to use in my groups and feel the dvd would be a great asset.

I really hope HBO will come with a solution to all this. This series is a valuable tool to educate the targeted population, those who are most vulnerable to addictions: teenagers… It’s really sad whats happening and ignorance is not a solution.
