Huffington Post, under the newly appointed CEO Eric Hippeau, has launched its second city vertical after the Chicago launch last year: it has added New York, the city where it is based. The section will feature “curated selection of the best New York news coverage, plus a collection of bloggers,” according to a posting on the launch by Arianna Huffington. It has tied up with about a dozen local outlets, its says, including the New York Observer, Gotham Gazette and the Brooklyn Rail. Absent from it: The NY Times, which has been pushing its own hyperlocal sites neighborhood sites, though that won’t prevent HuffPo from aggregating stories from the NYT.

The new section is headed by veteran journalist Dan Collins, until recently a producer for CBSNews.com, and former correspondent for U.S. News & World Report and the New York Daily News.

Meanwhile, on its Chicago edition, launched in August last year, the site has tied up with ESPN (NYSE: DIS), where HuffPo will provide headlines and blog posts to ESPNChicago.com local sports site, while it will get sports content for its own site. ESPNChicago was the first local sports site launched by the sports media company earlier in April.

Some more HuffPo-related stories: Simon Dumenco continues his “parasitism” tirade against the site, in a column on AdAge today, where he picks up on some of the more sensational HuffPo headlines, and picks up on the oft-cited complaint against the site: its rather liberal excerpting policy, something that landed the site in trouble before, including charges of plagiarism.
