Hyperlocal Orange County News Net Ceasing Operations - But May Relaunch
After just four months of operation, the Orange County News Network is shutting down, according to a memo obtained by the Orange County Biz Journal. The network was part of the larger U.S. Local News Network, which also runs the San Diego News Network and Southwest Riverside News Network. In any case, it’s a blow to USLNN’s goal of establishing other local news sites in 40 U.S. and Canadian cities over the next two years. USLNN has raised $3 million, including $1 million in January.

Update: In an e-mail response to questions from paidContent, USLNN head Neil Senturia said that the LA Times, the site’s partner, and USLNN mutually agreed to close the Orange County hyperlocal. “We still own the site and may relaunch,” Senturia said. “Right now, we are totally focused on the weekly print product in conjunction with the LA Times, which launched May 21 in San Diego.”
The Orange Count News Network employed 20 staffers and had arrangements with local papers as well as the Los Angeles Times Media Group.
USLNN grew out of the San Diego hyperlocal. It was founded by Senturia, a local technology entrepreneur. In his attempt to begin building his hyperlocal news empire, Senturia rounded up a number of execs from the San Diego Union Tribune, including former SDUT online head Chris Jennewein as the SDNN’s president.
