Industry Moves: Months After Meyer Leaves, About.com Has New CEO—Cella Irvine

imageScott Meyer stepped down last February as About.com CEO. Since then, the New York Times Co (NYSE: NYT). unit has been run by NYTCo’s top digital exec Martin Nisenholtz with Ron McCoy handling day-to-day operations. Now the company has gone outside for a successor: Cella Irvine, most recently chief administrative officer of Digitas Inc., joins July 28 as CEO of the About Group, reporting to Nisenholtz. In addition to flagship About.com, the group includes ConsumerSearch.com, UCompareHealthCare.com and Calorie-Count.com. Nisenholtz singled out her operating experience in the announcement: Irvine’s resume includes GM roles for Hearst New Media & Technology and New York Sidewalk, as well as an early stint at Prodigy. In the non-media realm, she was global head of strategic planning and then COO for a business unit of Marsh, Inc. from 2001-2005.
