Former Nokia interactive ad sales vet David Kohl has joined Vevo, the music video site that labels like UMG and Sony are hoping will be “the next Hulu.” As EVP of of sales and customer operations, Kohl will lead Vevo’s efforts to secure big brand sponsorships, reporting to CEO Rio Caraeff. Sources tell MediaMemo he’ll start out with a six-person sales team, which he plans to expand.

Kohl has the right blend of music industry and brand advertising contacts for the role: As head of sales and publishing for Nokia (NYSE: NOK) Interactive Advertising, he helped develop the company’s “mobile upfront,” securing advance ad deals from auto, entertainment and travel advertisers.

Before Nokia, he oversaw online and TV ad sales for various Viacom (NYSE: VIA) properties, brokering deals with brands like American Express and Pepsi. His appointment comes as Vevo staffs up its tech department (though YouTube will ultimately power the site’s back-end, and share in some of the revenues), and continues to hunt for investors. Release.
