In April, News Corp acquired social gaming developer Irata Labs but said it would be separate from potentially obvious existing properties like MySpace or game network IGN Entertainment. Now paidContent has learned that Jon Miller has hired digital media and gaming vet Sean Ryan to set up a new games unit, starting with Irata. Ryan is joining News Corp (NSDQ: NWS). Digital as EVP and GM of Games. Ryan will report to Roy Bahat, president of IGN, but the unit will be independent to ensure the church/state separation between IGN, which covers the games industry, and the game development. He will be hiring some staff but for now details about the new games group are vague.

Ryan has a varied background. For the past 18 months, he’s been doing a mix of consulting on gaming and monetization (through TAG and Loki Partners) along with being acting CEO of Live Journal.  Before that, he was founder and CEO of teen-centric virtual world Meez and, among other gigs, CEO of Listen.com.
