Jane Friedman’s OpenRoad Gets $3 Million Funding For eBooks Venture

OpenRoad Integrated Media, a still-stealth NYC-based eBooks marketing and publishing startup, has raised $3 million in funding, in a round led by Bay Area Holdings, a fund affiliated with Kohlberg Ventures, according to a new SEC filing. The company was founded this year by Jane Friedman, former CEO of HarperCollins Publishers Worldwide; she left the company in a huff last year to start this. Also involved as an executive officer is Jeff Sharp, film producer (“Boys Don’t Cry”) and Chris Lederer, former CMO at HarperCollins. As to what the new company will do, it is billing itself as beyond books into “integrated media”, whatever that means. If I were to guess, taking books into multi-platform plays.
