LAT-WaPo Syndication Service Dissolved; LAT Merges Into McClatchy-Tribune Combine

The Los Angeles Times-Washington Post News Service, a syndication service formed back in 1962 with more than 600 clients worldwide, is being closed down by the end of this year, and LAT will now become part of McClatchy-Tribune Information Services (MCT), a JV of McClatchy (NYSE: MNI) and Tribune, the companies announced late today. This means LAT and WaPo will now become competitors in the syndication space, as Howard Kurtz points out. LAT’s sale in 2000 to Tribune, and Tribune’s own sale to Sam Zell and its subsequent bankruptcy haven’t helped the JV. More details here.
