Liberty Media Profits, Revs Rise, Boosted By QVC
In keeping with the general trend of cable companies getting through the recession largely unscathed, Liberty Media (NSDQ: LINTA) posted solid revenues and profits in Q1, thanks in large part to healthy performance at shopping network QVC. Meanwhile the Starz unit was a bit mixed. The Starz group’s revenue was up a decent 3 percent to $307 million, while adjusted OIBDA fell 1 percent to $103 million, That decline was blamed on higher sales and marketing costs tied to the cable property’s Spartacus: Blood and Sand production, which was shown in January.
In addition to those expenses, the Starz and Encore nets experienced average subscription unit decreases of 5 percent and 3 percent, respectively.
