Local Newspapers And Sites Watch Out, Craigslist Adds 140 New Cities

Craigslist is growing. The online classifieds site has added 140 new cities to its roster, bulking up its coverage by 25 percent, per the NYT. New U.S. locations include small and midsize cities and counties like Oneonta, N.Y.; Craigslist also added over 50 international cities, including Shenzen, China (with a population of 14 million) and Lucknow, India (population 2.5 million).

Given the sustained growth (in interest, at least—though not necessarily ad revenues) in the “hyperlocal” content space, Craigslist’s expansion pits it against startups like outside.in, as well as the local online arms of giants like MSNBC and the NYT. While the bigger sites can leverage their infrastructure and innovative new ad platforms, that hasn’t kept real estate, job and and adult entertainment advertisers from defaulting to Craigslist.

This is great news and not competitive to Outside.in.  We have long said there will be new models emerging and this is a great example.
