Digital rights manager Macrovision is selling its Software Business Unit to PE firm Thoma Cressey Bravo for $200 million in cash. The deal still has to be reviewed by regulators, but the companies expect that the transaction should be completed by April. As a result of the purchase, the Software Business Unit will operate as a stand alone entity. The unit creates and markets Macrovision’s (NSDQ: MVSN) Flexnet and InstallShield product lines, which basically help manage software licensing and compliance for digital content. Apart from this sale, over the past month, Macrovision has found itself in the position of having to win over shareholders for its $2.8 billion acquisition of Gemstar-TV Guide, which was able to clear anti-trust hurdles with federal regulators.
