Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) has gotten yet another major hospital to embrace its HealthVault online health records platform: the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota says it will use HealthVault to build an online application that Mayo Clinic patients can use to store medical information. The application also will include specialized tools to help monitor a number of ailments—and provide treatment recommendations; it stems from a strategic partnership the Mayo Clinic and Microsoft announced last January. The deal is important because it should spur adoption of HealthVault. It is unclear how many people are using HealthVault or competitor Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Health. However, it’s much easier for patients to use the platforms if their medical organizations have ties to them, and both Google Health and HealthVault have been steadily signing on hospitals, pharmacies and HMOs. Both HealthVault and Google Health are also expected to benefit from the recent economic stimulus bill, which allocates billions to the goal of electronic health records for every American.
