Microsoft Admits To Xbox 360 Hardware Problems; Will Take Unexpected $1 Billion-Plus Charge

In an unexpected move, Microsoft announced Thursday that it will take a charge of $1.05 billion to $1.15 billion due to what the company calls “an unacceptable number of repairs” to Xbox 360 consoles. The Xbox 360 is a core element of Microsoft’s connected entertainment strategy. Warranties will be extended to three years for consoles that have general hardware failures indicated by three flashing red lights; Microsoft will reimburse retroactively anyone who has paid for repair expenses related to that error message. Release.

seattlepi.com: “Apart from the unexpected financial hit, it’s a shift in the company’s position on the issue, and it may be seen as vindication for gamers who have complained about problems. ... The conference call revealed another interesting bit of news: Microsoft says it sold a cumulative total of 11.6 million Xbox 360s as of June 30, missing its previous forecast of 12 million.”

Mary Jo Foley: “Microsoft officials have said they believe Xbox hardware failure rates to run between three and five percent, which the company considers acceptable. But some retailers claim the Xbox console failure rate to be substantially higher, approaching 33-plus percent.”

LAT: “Microsoft said the glitch, which causes the console to freeze up, affects a small percentage of units. But analysts say the financial effect was substantial, effectively adding $100 in cost for each of the nearly 12 million consoles the company has sold since the Xbox 360’s debut in November 2005.”

I've been through 5 Xbox 360s already since 2003 and I am not exaggerating. I've stayed loyal to Microsoft for 6 years now and all they can give me is one lousy month of xbox live for free. I'm getting pretty tired of this, and I am considering buying a Playstation. I don't care if Xbox has the better game library. What's the point when I know that after a few months my console is going to die again?

    GG Microsoft.

After selling my 360 and getting a ps3, I'll be doing less QQ more PEW PEW

This is for all of the people that post comments bragging that they never had a problem with their console. 7 months after buying my 360 I got the 3 red lights of death. Customer service denied my claim for a repair since I was past the 6 month warranty. After spending over $600 on microsoft products for the 360 I refuse to give them 1 more dime. 2 months later Microsoft announced that they were extending the warranty for 1 year. I sent the console in and got it back in 2 months. The day I got it back, I turned it on and the system went to update itself and froze. I now had to send the xbox 360 back in for a second time to get repaired. I have now had the 360 for 4 months and here we go again….....3 red lights of death…...So for all you people who think microsoft is wonderful and you don't have these types of issues, I hope for your sake nothing ever does happen, because once your warranty is up and your system crashes on you, you too shall join the crowd and be forced to pay more money if you want to continue using their products….

    Shame on you Gates…...

This won't effect the 360 much at all. The xbox has better games and the games that are on both the xbox 360 and the PS3, look and play better on the 360. The online play is second to none as well, Sony is just playing catch up there. I am by NO means a Microsoft fan, I have been using Apple's for 12 years, so for me to pick a Microsoft product over Sony was based purely on performance and ease of use, not to mention the game library. I have a PS3 as well, but it is my xbox that gets all the attention. I have had my 360 since launch, and have experienced no problems.

This is a much better customer service response to an issue I had with incorrect billing earlier this year.  Xbox live's cancellation procedure led to several months of additional billing to my account, even though i canceled the service.  When I attempted to get a refund for the three months, I was told "to cut my losses", since they had a "zero refund policy."  Since it was a small amount of money, i did, but also lost complete loyalty to Microsoft.  This article just solidifies my distrust to their product quality and competitiveness in gaming marketplace against Playstation and the Wii.
