Microsoft Plans Another Season For Its TV-Style Game Show On The Xbox

Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) is bringing back 1 vs. 100, the live game show it launched in open beta on the Xbox this summer. The company tells us that the second season of the show—which lets thousands of Xbox owners respond to questions while listening to a live host who provides banter—will debut Nov. 19 and run for 14 weeks. As we wrote back in the spring, the show’s first season attracted a number of big advertisers who ran spots during commercial breaks, including Honda, Sprint (NYSE: S), 7-Eleven and Doritos.

In its announcement of the upcoming season, Microsoft released a few data points to provide a gauge for how the first season had gone. The company said that on average “more than half a million unique contestants” competed weekly, with about 114,000 people in the U.S. and Canada and 79,000 people in the U.K. and Ireland competing during each game. The show was downloaded onto consoles about three million times.

While Microsoft is portraying the show as a success, it still won’t say whether it plans to introduce additional shows to Xbox Live. That was the initial plan back in July 2008, when it introduced 1 vs. 100 as what it said would be part of a “collection of virtual game shows” that would be featured on a new Primetime Channel.
