MTVN Expands Online Syndication; Deals With Online Video Sites

MTV Networks (NYSE: VIA) continues to expand its online syndication by adding five online video sites to its portal and social network partners: Dailymotion, GoFish (OTCBB: GOFH), iMeem, MeeVee and Veoh. The Viacom unit will provide both clips and long-form content from 10 cable and broadband networks including Comedy Central, MTV, VH1 and Nickelodeon. The online video site deals include off-site embedding.

Greg Clayman, EVP-digital distribution and business development for MTVN, said each of the partner sites has agreed to carry a branded channel and has committed to marketing that will highlight the channels. Clayman would not discuss or confirm details but I expect MTVN to get at least 70 percent of the ad revenue split with each site. MTVN will sell all of the advertising for its branded channels. Clayman said it’s too early to gauge the results of MTVN’s initial syndication push.

Veoh gets another major provider, adding Viacom’s MTVN to CBS; Sumner Redstone is chairman of each company. It could be seen as contradictory given Viacom’s lawsuit against Google (NSDQ: GOOG) and YouTube and Veoh’s guerilla tactics when it comes to video content from other networks. In fact, my conversation with Clayman came a few hours after we posted about Veoh’s offerings from Hulu as well as Fox and NBC downloads through VeohTV. As part of the deal, Veoh and the other sites will filter out MTVN content the company hasn’t provided. Clayman’s careful response: “Working with companies who value our content and respect copyright is important to us.” He said by working with Veoh and others, MTVN can help them become better. “We have relationships with these guys now, we are working very closely with all of them.” .
