MyLife.com Tries To Out-Google Google With People Search

imageTo the likes of Spock, Spokeo and Pipl.com—you can now add yet another social media-focused people search engine: MyLife. The product of last year’s merger between Reunion.com and Wink, MyLife aims to capitalize on all the info people reveal about themselves through various social networks. It has more than one billion profiles in its index already, the company says.

While Google (NSDQ: GOOG) owns the core search space, it’s still not the de facto standard for verticals like image, video search, or even classifieds. That’s where upstarts like MyLife join the ranks of rivals like Yahoo and Microsoft that are increasingly trying to dominate verticals like people search and e-commerce. Of course, there’s no comparison between MyLife and Google quantitatively—Google.com clocks in a much higher volume of searches—but there’s also no way to break out how many searches there are for individual names or people. During some informal, qualitative searches we did for “everyday people” (as opposed to well-known personalities), MyLife delivered more relevant results; the queries resulted in links to social-media profiles, former high schools and colleges; in the case of MyLife members, it led to detailed contact info. While Google’s people search also returned social-media profile listings, there were also less-relevant documents like news clips, blog posts and text ads from other white pages search engines.

More after the jump...

MyLife has two major hurdles to clear in its push to own people search: users need to register to access basic results, and the most detailed listings are locked behind a pay wall. But CEO Jeffrey Tinsley said that’s the main difference between his company and other people-search outfits: the company operates both ad-supported and subscription-based services, and claims over a million paid subscribers. He added that the combined companies had brought in about $52 million in revenue in 2008—up 92 percent from the previous year—and that he expected to turn in a “significant profit” this year off about $100 million in sales.

Where’s the revenue coming from? Mostly subscriptions, though Tinsley said ad sales would contribute more this year—even with the downturn: “We’re not targeting demographics with no money,” he said, noting that MyLife’s core user is mostly women over 25. He added that the company was attracting about 2.5 million new registered users per month, though the influx seemingly comes at quite a price: MyLife spends about $35 to $45 million on advertising per year on paid search, display and text distribution ads; Tinsley insisted that the majority of new registrants came to the site organically, not through marketing tactics.

mylife doesn’t even give the first and last name of the person looking for you.  I can’t contact someone from 38 years ago in my life without NAMES.  My terminal blocks access at work, and I have no computor to access at home.

Question…If I tried to look up info on a member of mylife, gave them an email address but didn't sign up for anything, will that person see that I tried to view his profile?

  • April

I am having same problem as ron above.  I try to log on to site but keep getting that my e-mail is invalid, yet I keep getting e-mails from them wanting me to sign up for premium service.  I signed up for the 3-month service and since I signed up I have not been able to access site.  I sent e-mails to correct problem and have heard nothing. Needless to say I have not gleaned any info on friends at all!!!!

John you are so right!  I pushed the button and BAM an email went out to MY ENTIRE ADDRESS BOOK!  Of course I had to send out my own email to everyone in my address book, so that they would not open it and fall pret to my misfortune.

MyLife.com is the worst, most unethical company.  They will go down in flames with this kind of underhanded way of collecting info.  Reunion.com became obsolete when Facebook came along (and for free).  They are trying to recoup their losses and force members to join with entire address book mass emailing.  MyLife sucks!  But my life is better off without it.

Don't get sucked in as I did.  I have tried to cancel and have my e-mail address and info removed, and can't seem to find the correct page to do that.  I am going to write a letter and hopefully get some response.  After reading all the above stories of others and their encounters with this company, I JUST WANT TO CANCEL OUT OF THIS WHOLE MESS.  I was shocked to see everyone in my address book listed as my contacts.  Some are friends, but alot are companies I have written to.  I haven't paid any money like others have, thank goodness.

Advertised as free information about who is searching you, after registering with basic info about me, it's immediately apparent that nothing here is free or of value.

About 7 pages then I had to click through (AVOID) asking for more of my personal information, as I tried to find who was searching for me.  I always ended up back to the paid subscription page., and I never got a single piece of info for free.

Had I spent the 10 seconds researching the company, I would have quickly found that this is just Reunion.com with a new name.  Anyone familiar with Reunion.com knows exactly what there in store for.

Just avoid this site at all costs.  I cancelled and deleted my account about 2 minute after singing up.  I'm sure I've got a handful of emails already waiting for me in my inbox.

Be prepared to be tricked if you register for Mylife.  First they trick you into giving up your email address book than once you have given it up they make it look like you have to push a green button to move to the next page. DO NOT PUSH THIS BUTTON!  Once you push it then they send an email to absolutely everyone in your address book and tell them that "John Simpson" or whoever you are wants you to join Mylife.  Then according to some sights they take some of those addresses and send emails to just random people to get them to join.

They are very underhanded!  They may not be breaking any laws but they are not an ethical company.

MyLife.com culls your information from court records! They will list, as your friend/relative, anyone who has lived in the same house as you, an ex-spouse, live-in friend, ex-friend-come-enemy. They will list places you haven't lived. Months of e-mails (70ish) and phone calls and they won't correct or remove information that is untrue and libelous about you. They tell you they remove your profile from being able to be searched on Google or within their own site but they never correct the profile they've created on you (without your permission) nor take it down.

Don't pay them any money, e-mail and phone continuously to demand your profile removal, click on their ads continuously to run up their bill, call a lawyer if the information on their site about you is false. They can legally publish anything about you, as anyone can, but it is "libel" for them to put on their site anything untrue.

Go after them. Lord knows I'm looking for a lawyer to start a suit against them!

  • Jennifer

Don't get sucked in like I did.  I thought it was 5 dallors a month and then all of
a sudden there is 60. out of my account.  When I called them on the phone and told them I said I want it canceled.  I called my bank to stop the payment and it got through anyway.  I have sent them emails galore and no response.  That money should have been put back.  Now I have involved my attorney and it may
cost me money but it will also put them on the list for bad companies with the Better business bureau.  I also noticed a charge from someone I haven't heard of savings something and they said it was part of this company so now that makes it 80.95.  So now they have my money and the account is canceled.

White pages refers to "free search" on MyLife.com and when you go to that site it also says "free" but when you try to get into find ONE person all of a sudden they want info and $$$$ to "join".  Stop saying FREE!
