National Geographic Cuts Back On Adventure

As National Geographic invests in digital with the purchase of a stake in ScienceBlogs, it is also cutting back on one of its five print publications, citing poor ad sales. The company tells the NYT it will no longer regularly print National Geographic Adventure, which had focused on adventure travel and ecotourism. Instead, it will publish two newsstand-only editions of the magazine a year and maintain the publication’s website in some form. Executives tell the NYT that they had tried to sell the magazine but potential buyers wanted to keep the National Geographic brand in the magazine’s title, something that the company would not agree to. Because of the cutback, 17 staffers are being laid off.
