NBCU’s Digital Team To Move To Englewood Cliffs, NJ; Room For 450

Part of NBC Universal’s digital investment is going into a digital campus at the Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey where CNBC is produced. By the end of 2007, paidContent.org has confirmed, the company expects to move much of its digital team—about 200 people—to the new campus. According to a source familiar with the plans, the space is being designed with potential to house up to 450 employees as part of expansion plans. I was told the GE division eventually expects to fill that space. CNBC.com is already being produced from there and NBCU’s digital distribution unit headed by J.B. Perrette is located nearby.
No details on how much is being spent but the idea is to unite as much of the digital operations as possible in one place; currently the iVillage staff is in one location while digital operations overall are spread across multipkle locations in the tri-state area including several different floors at 30 Rock. George Kliavkoff, brought on board last year as chief digital officer, will be based there; Beth Comstock, who heads digital as part of a broader portfolio, will keep her office at 30 Rock but plans to spend a considerable amount of time in New Jersey.
—The iVillage move was reported by fishbowlNY, which seemed to think the move had something to do with some iVillage brass already living in New Jersey. We also heard from people who thought the move was tied up in a recent reorganization, something our source denies. “It’s not any way related in any shape or form. This is happening because NBCU is investing in digital media.” (The reorganization, I was told, was the result of integrating iVillage’s various operations.)
—We’ve heard—and confirmed—that employees are taking part in the planning through focus groups. One example: the number of daily van rides between Manhattan and Englewood Cliffs already has been expanded.
