NBCU Sued Over Aborted Domain Name Sale

NBC Universal (NYSE: GE) is being sued by Done Ventures over what the latter claims is a sale gone wrong. According to Techcrunch’s account, Done says that it had an agreement on May 21 with NBCU to purchase the unused domain names “Women.com” and “Women.net” for $1 million. But at the last minute, Done says, NBCU President and CEO Jeff Zucker overruled the agreement and decided to kill the transaction on May 24. NBCU reps were not available for comment.
Done filed the suit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday. The complaint alleges breach of contract and wants the court to compel NBCU to transfer ownership of the two domains.
Whether or not it prevails, Done is certainly getting some attention for its plans to establish a female-focused content network and while there are a lot of verticals aimed at women, the Manhattan Beach, CA-based company claims that use of the Women.com domain name is “critical” to its efforts.
